The work of a freelancer, like myself, ebbs and flows. When it rains, it pours; when it’s dry, it’s like, bone-dry. So I can’t think of a better way to spend my Wednesday, than to share this neat emoji & keyboard shortcut trick, inspired in large part from these articles by Casey Liss & Zach Holman.
In OS X and iOS, you can create keyboard shortcuts, text snippets that expand into a phrase or character of your choice. On Macs, these shortcuts are found in
System Preferences.app > Keyboard > Text; on iOS devices, they're in
Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts. Thanks to black magic, these shortcuts sync among all your Apple devices.
Feel free to use & abuse this handy-dandy list of shortcuts I created:
|Type this keyboard shortcut…||…to create magic!!! :D|
|eemergency||Umm I might be in trouble. If you don’t hear back from me in 5 minutes, please call me. If I don’t answer, call the police.|
|sslowclap||👏 … 👏 … 👏|
These shortcuts range from the silly (💁🏼💁🏼) to the super-serious (eemergency), and from the friendly (👋) to the obscene (✊🏻🍆). (John Gruber invented “Fist Eggplant,” so he could more … creatively express his disdain for conceited articles, using “the jag-off motion.”
A quick note about syncing keyboard shortcuts between Apple devices: It works like magic 99% of the time, but for some bizarre reason, it’s common for them to stop syncing. Sooo I actually rely on TextExpander for all of those fun emojis ‘n’ stuff on my Mac.
